THE PROCESS

Ceramics is an intricate, technical and timely craft with many stages, but it's a process that completely captured Cas's heart the moment the clay hit her hands. Come on the creative journey and see what’s involved in bringing each of our handcrafted Thompson Lane ceramics to life.

Step 1

INSPIRATION, RESEARCH & DESIGN

Where each and every piece begins… the inspiration and research behind Thompson Lane products can span months or even years, and varies significantly in origin. From the flowing fabrics of wedding gowns to organic natural formations like pearls or bold monochromatic colour schemes, we look to influences outside the norm. Over time, an unwavering theme tends to emerge and the ideas and sketches start flowing.

Step 2

MAKE

An exploration of the functional and sculptural potential of clay, each ceramic piece is currently handcrafted in Queensland by our Founder and Ceramicist, Cas Thompson. Her preferred technique is handbuilding; a method of creating ceramics that focuses on slowly and intentionally moulding each piece by hand and celebrates their unique variations opposed to striving for precise repetition of forms.

Step 3

GLAZE

After drying for a couple of weeks, pieces undergo an initial firing and are then ready to be individually brush glazed. Classic monochromatic palettes and bold patterns are meticulously painted across the surface, each requiring multiple layers. The glazed pieces then undergo a second firing to complete the chemical transformation from clay to ceramic. Some collections also undergo a third glaze and firing stage to create luxe metallic or pearlescent finishes.

Step 4

FINISHING TOUCHES

Once all firings are complete, each piece undergoes an array of finishing touches such as sanding and sealing the surfaces, and for some collections, the addition of luxe embellishments like the handcrafted pearl and chain harnesses on some of the Perla pieces. This stage is all about elevating each piece to ensure an outcome of flawless beauty and long term functionality.

Step 5

PACKAGING

Ceramics require careful packing to ensure their safe arrival and great consideration and time has been invested to ensure our pieces are not only well protected with sustainable materials, but that your unwrapping experience is special too. Every parcel is lovingly hand packaged and includes various keepsake details designed and handmade in house, but we’ll leave those parts as a surprise!
